The best camera is the one with you.

I’ve always been an advocate for this saying. I know that as a professional photographer, I have to live up to certain expectations of the kind of gear I carry. And though I do crave the quality and functions my DSLR gives me, sometimes it really doesn’t beat my light and always-present phone camera. It’s a different kind of challenge to create beautiful photos with the limitations of a mobile device, but I love that with Instagram I can share relatively quickly, when sometimes I don’t even have my laptop on hand.

Phone photography, or “Phoneography” as some call it, is getting to be quite an art in itself! These days my process involves importing my newly selected images on VSCO Cam, and using a variety of their amazing presets and manual controls before sharing on Instagram and other social media.

I also occasionally come across photos I really don’t want to crop to Instagram’s standard square dimensions. For my Android phone, I find the simple #Square app to be perfect for adding a bit of blank space before uploading to Instagram. What’s your process for mobile photos?

Here’s a small selection of photos from my Instagram feed that features photos I’ve taken on my trips near and far, with my phone camera or a small Lomography plastic film camera.
