As a Hong Kong portrait photographer, I had the incredible opportunity to photograph architect Marisa Yiu for an editorial assignment at Cubes Magazine. The shoot took place at her studio, ESKYIU, nestled in the creative hub of Wong Chuk Hang.

Photographing Marisa in her own element was an inspiring experience. We chose to position her by the window, where natural light poured in, illuminating the space and highlighting her curated custom shelves. These shelves were not just functional; they were filled with a collection of intriguing items she’s gathered over the years, each piece telling a story of its own.

In preparing for the shoot, I focused on finding the perfect spot that offered both great lighting and an engaging background that reflected Marisa’s unique style. But more importantly, I wanted to capture her portraits in a relaxed, candid way. I engaged her in conversation, allowing her to feel comfortable and authentic in front of the camera. We chatted about her work at ESKYIU and Design Trust, but also her private life as a wife and mother. This connection resulted in portraits that truly captured her essence as an architect and a creative personality.

The final images not only showcase Marisa’s architectural vision but also her warmth and passion for her work. This assignment reinforced my belief in the power of portrait photography to connect people with their environments and narratives. I’m so happy to see the work published in print and digitally on Cubes Magazine!
